From Plettenberg Bay, South Africa / London, United Kingdom ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Jenniker Threesome This is Erika Jenniker, with CJ her boy, and Snoekie the white dog. Snoekie is quite terrifying - constant loud growling, but as you can see here, still too much of a coward, and constantly hiding behind Erika. I think that the tripod with those 3 long legs might have had something to do with it ![]() I asked them to crouch down in this narrow passage between their one-roomed house, and this newer addition as a day room - a caravan that they managed to drag up the very steep valley, and that now has doubled the size of their living quarters. This community of Vrystaat is alongside the main road between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, and a big section of this community's income comes from selling amazing indigenous wild flowers to passing motorists. These forests are seriously protected, so whether this is a legal activity or not, I am unsure of, however, the local authorities turn a blind eye, as this practice has been going on for many decades now, and given the general shortage of jobs, one can understand why. CJ reminds me of the little girl in the Simpsons. He sucks on that dummy in exactly the same fashion - it moves in and out of his mouth like a piston - just like Maggie Simpson. ![]() |

From Plettenberg Bay, South Africa / London, United Kingdom ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thriller The term catatonic trance came to mind when I was watching this gent strut his Michael Jackson moves, although he did occasionaly lift one leg. He was really not very good at this. Most of the time he was simply trembling and sweating copiously. Of course no one could hear his music, and that simply added to the comical appeal. These four girls were dancing to one side, copying him, and having a real laugh, which he obviously enjoyed, for every now and then he gave half a step towards them, enough to send them scattering away in utter panic, simply to re-group and do it all again. The climax came when one of their friends wanted to take a picture, and this was the closest they allowed themselves to come. My next shot shows them flying off again after Michael XXXL turned and invited them closer ![]() ![]() |

From Plettenberg Bay, South Africa / London, United Kingdom ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Very Dapper Mr. Ruiters This gentleman has quite a long name: Isaac James Raymond David Ruiters. Born 1933. I should have asked him why the long name, but did not think of it. I came across him at an intersection on a secondary road, where he was looking after some parcels that someone was going to pick up later in the day. He is from the Griqua town of Kranshoek . Mr. Ruiters struck me as a terribly proud man, but in such a humble and sweet way. Every question that I asked him about his past (farm worker & builder), and his view of the future, was answered in religious overtones, and on my departure he took my hand and thanked me for taking his picture, and for spending time with him next to the road, and so forth. In view of Bob's forum posting, where he tells how difficult and restrictive things have become, even to photograph his own market town, the experiences that I have when going home is so pleasant, and refreshing. So it should actually be. In this vein I can assure you that I obtained verbal consent to submit his photo for publication However, given his probable poor understanding of the WWW, and the fact that he did not sign the required model release form (sic), I guess that it is quite possible to still string me up for infringing some or other invasion of whatever![]() ![]() |

From Plettenberg Bay, South Africa / London, United Kingdom ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Consolation Photography is an elegiac art, a twilight art. Most subjects photographed are, just by virtue of being photographed, touched with pathos. All photographs are 'memento mori'. To take a photograph is to participate in another person's mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time's relentless melt. ...Susan Sontag: American author, literary theorist, and political activist. 1933 - 2004 I wish to dedicate this photograph of Lorraine Wildeman to Phyllis Clarke for her constant assistance, encouragement and vision. Thanks Phyllis. ![]() |

From Plettenberg Bay, South Africa / London, United Kingdom ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Broken I took this portrait of Shiela Jantjies last week during my visit to my family in South Africa. This was the 1st time that I photographed the people of Kranshoek, a Griqua community outside my home town of Plettenberg Bay. The Griquas consitute a subgroup of South Africa's heterogeneous and muliracial Coloured people. With the recent demographic changes since the fall of Apartheid, this community have now become much more mixed, with newcomers from the Transkei (Xhosa), as well as many folk from more distant sub-Saharan countries in search of economic betterment. I accompanied a 'dotter' on this day - Cathy Coetzee - a health worker from 'That's It!' (American Charitable NGO - part of the George Bush initiative to combat Aids/HIV) assisting with the curbing and treatment of TB and HIV cases, which is rife in the more socially - economically deprived areas and communities in South Africa. Whilst I was driving back home after our walkabout in Kranshoek to administer medicines to the more compromised patients at their houses, I noticed this dilapidated but attractive very green house, and stopped to introduce myself, and subsequently took pictures of Shiela, her sisters, and their kids. It was quite gloomly inside so had to up the ISO. After our picture taking session was finished, Shiela showed me the rest of their house, and that was when I saw the potential of this particular corner in the bathroom. Times are hard, money is little, and the menfolk are absent. Shiela was a primary school teacher before succumbing to depression in 1995 after her divorce, and have been unemployed ever since. Now her daughters and their boyfriends support her, and she collects a disability grant. She is uncertain of the future, and here I have tried to use the cracked mirror to illustrate that. In that future reflection is both light, and a representative of the next generation bathed in this light, but in spite of this promise things are very uncertain for her at the moment....and this responsability is weighing her down... I salute Shiela for her honesty, frankness and willingness to have me share her story with you. ![]() |

I can only assume that a concerned Adean in the back had no clue how wide a focal lenght of 32mm can see. After all, he heard me saying that I am taking a picture of 'both' of them. I didn't tell him, either.... ![]() ![]() |

From Plettenberg Bay, South Africa / London, United Kingdom ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Just like Me The little one's name is Pumeza. She is 2 yrs old, and according to her dad Billy, she is very intelligent, confident, and 'knows everything and everybody' in the street. He quite noticably beams with pride when he speaks about her, and having taken pictures of her this day, I have to agree that she is a delight to work with. Just like putty - ask her to stand in a particular way and keep very still, and she simply does it. No probs. She is sitting here on the family sofa with her auntie Janene, who is 18, and who sports a similar hairstyle. Apparently Pumeza copied Janene with this. This community of Green Valley, also called Wittedrift, is about 10km from my house in Plettenberg Bay, but feels like a world apart. Green Valley is quite an insular community, and the people here have essentially become one huge circle of friends and family. They are not keen on 'inkomers' / new settlers, and maintain that this keeps the village 'clean', with the result that crime and drug use is just about non-existent in this place. They are also quite conservative in their outlook, and religion plays a big part of their lives. This is the 1st time I have managed to get a publication on the people this particular village, so I am very chuffed about this one! ![]() |

From Plettenberg Bay, South Africa / London, United Kingdom ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ At Home 1: My Entrance This image was taken last weekend when we had our OnExposure get-together in Amsterdam. I set up my tripod in this dark alley, and was composing to shoot a pic with the air conditioning units as the focal point, when this chap squeezed past and entered his doorway at the end of this alley, some take-away noodles in hand. This is Andy, and he was very kind to act as my model for the next 30mins. After we did some impromptu shots (it was really quite dark), he requested me to take a picture of the grill at the entrance, which he wanted to send to his parents. This is it, and I hope that he'll like it. I did not use a flash, but tried to create the impression of a staight on-camera flash. He told me that he is setting up a tourist business (Happytours), introducing visitors to an arternative and arty community living somewhere in the old dockyards of Amsterdam. He was due to go online last week. I wish him the best with this new enterprise! ![]() |

From Plettenberg Bay, South Africa / London, United Kingdom ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Living Room I took this photograph of Chantal Watson (Willy's daughter) and Adean Moses in the lounge of the house belonging to Willy Watson, the flower seller, who has featured in a published photo of mine. Unfortunately this room was without any windows, and far too dark to shoot in available light. On realising this, Willy promptly removed a piece of corrugated iron from one wall, which resulted in this shaft of light penetrating the darkness. I am sure that this must be their makeshift window (apparently the one wall of his house collapsed during some heavy rains last year, and I think that the corrugated iron structure is only temporary). This shaft of light lit up only part of the room, and left the upper and lower sections very dark. The first submission was rejected, and I had to do a fair amout of PP to correct this imbalance in light. Luckily the reflection on the floor from the mirror in the background assisted to add some perspective and proportion. I do not think that this would have worked without the benefit of this reflection. I am very grateful to those members who helped with the Critique of this image. ![]() |

From Plettenberg Bay, South Africa / London, United Kingdom ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Jerome & Jeraldo For years now I have noticed this cottage in a most charming setting next to the road just outside Knysna along the Garden Route. This time I pulled in and after an introduction, started snapping away at the Christians family and all the kids that soon arrived on the scene. As with the Kannemeyer series, I have visited them again, and in the process got to know more of the family members and neighbours, adding more photos to their family album on each visit, and ocassionally landing a gem for myself. The Christians have been living in this cottage at Bracken Hill for four generations, and Jerome is now the senior member, and lives here with his sister. He is here photographed with his cousin, Jeraldo, who has just returned from school. After finishing high school, he did IT training for 18 months, but as reasonable jobs are hard to find, he now is a 'meter' at the local forestry station . That is someone who measures the tree trunks once they are felled, and calculates what best way to achieve maximum yield from the trunk. Personally I am so glad that Jerome's picture was selected, as this gentle person served as my 'link' to this insular community as well as a similar one called Vrystaat up on a hill close by. ![]() |
