About me
Hi, my name is WK Chew and I am from Penang Island, Malaysia.

My philosophy of a photograph is simple, it must captures the moment of life. Since it captures the moment of life, it must have people in it and I particularly like black and white portraits. Textures, shapes and expressions will be magnified without the distraction of colors.

Every moment is unique and it may happens only once and can never be repeated. It also means that I am there in every moment that I capture. Be it candid, street, everyday, indoor, outdoor or studio, I simply love black and white photography.

I also like to take photographs of people together with the environment they are in. I like to show how the people is linked to the surrounding, the works they are doing, the activities they are doing or the situation they are in.

Recently I also picked up some landscapes shooting particularly seascapes or coastal scenes.

Grass-man and the horse-man

The grass-man has been walking 1km and still another 1km to home. The grassland is just right behind the mountain Bromo and he has to pass the desert called "pasir berbisik" or whispering sands.

The warm air as result of the sun lights creates smoke which coming out from the cold sands. It was about 10 to 15 degrees up there.

I was a painter when I was kid. Now I love photography more.
In painting you can draw exactly what you have in your head,
In photography you have to arrange everything (with its all difficulties and limitations, time and cost), before you can shot.
A friend told me, if you want a great works, shoot like a painter!
I always keep it in my mind. Now I saw all these difficulties, limitations, time consumed and cost, as challanges.

Don't be sad Grandma

This grandma and grandson are two of residents who live in the village call Sada, located in Lombok, just the next island to Bali. There are about 200 family members live in this village.
The village is still maintained in traditional way. Like this house, made from wood, and rattan. The floor are made from the cow faeces.

I am married with 2 children (now young adults) and live in Johannesburg, South Africa. I've been an a creative director at a few large multi-national agencies and went on my own in 1998. While I still do design and art direction the majority of my income now comes from photography, my first love. The 2 disciplines do however work hand in hand with each other.

About me
