"In our case, if we developed a full frame camera, it's likely that very few of our recent DA lenses (those designed for APS-C) would be able to properly fill the viewing area of this new sensor. And although we have some wonderful FA lenses, like my favorite FA 31mm Limited, I'm not sure even this lens would be up to the optical challenge." From "Op-Ed thoughts by the Spa" - April 25, 2009, nedbunnell.blogspot.com
Ned Bunnell once mentioned in his blog that part of the reason why Pentax hasn't released a 24x36mm DSLR is because the few FA/DFA lenses that are still being manufactured may not be good enough for 24x36mm digital. He said he wasn't sure if even the 31/1.8 Limited would be good enough. I thought that was quite an amazing statement. The folks who own Canon and Nikon 24x36mm DSLRs are all happily using lenses that are vastly inferior to the 31, and yet they don't seem to have many complaints. Is Mr. Bunnell really saying that the $100 Nikon 50/1.8 delivers superior image quality on 24x36mm digital than the $900 31/1.8 would be able to deliver? That certainly seemed to be the gist of it. I don't buy it for one minute, but I was rather astounded that he said it. |
