These items would need to be able to take the 220V or 240V power at I think 60 hz. If he has a 110V unit then he needs to use a good step down unit that can handle the power. If original - then he can see what the label states on the magnetic ballast and have it checked out by an electrician to make sure it’s not giving out the correct power. If it’s been changed out – to an electronic transformer (last 10-15 yrs) - that could definitely be an issue… Cold cathode lamps don’t like the new fangled electronic ballast/transformers. They work better on the older magnetic ballast- open core and coil type transformers that the original Graphlarger unit used about 40 yrs ago. Another item to check is the source of his electricity… if you are at the end of your power grid -then the power will spike up and down during the day depending on who is ahead of you in the power grid. A large surge suppressor (approx 1200 mA) would be good for that to help product your equipment from being fried as well as checking with the power company to see if there can be anything to help stabilize the power to his location. My first inclination is to check the electrical components in the housing as well as the transformer to make sure it’s what it supposed to be. If the transformer is not original to the unit then there could be a compatibility issue – i.e. electronic vs magnetic ballast .
