Weather the Storm Dad Englishman in New York 50000 Dong On the outskirts of Hoi An we came across a family irrigating a paddy field; this backbreaking and tedious routine involves scooping water in a bucket threaded cats cradle-like on a thin rope. Their young daughter looked on as the parents worked away. We asked to take their photograph and then gave the girl some money which she took impassively. The realization of how comfortable my life is in the West compared to so many of those who live in the East hit hard. I left feeling a slight sense of shame and the chill of the encroaching evening. My sister was working with a disabled group of twenty-five Vietnamese who have formed a co-operative.
