Another Miracle

Photographing the birth of a child is something very few parents want to miss. Since I had seen childbirths before, I thought I knew what to expect. I wanted to capture the indescribable feeling of becoming a parent and holding your baby for the first time. I had some ideas of how the picture could be made, but as it turned out, I knew nothing about what was to come.
I got the message at work. An ambulance was on its way to pick up my pregnant wife. Something had happened, and both the child and his mother were in danger. I don't know how I managed to bring my camera along; maybe it was already packed in one of our bags. At that point, my mind was somewhere else.

We happened upon this magical place on a late October night, when a good friend of mine (also a photographer) and I were searching for a spot to photograph a famous bridge in Hungary. A single light cast such a dramatic light on the stair walls that led up to the bridge that we both knew instantly it was special.

Split. Between light and darkness, right and wrong, two contradicting forces. It's such a fascinating topic. We all learn about yin and yang at an early age, even if we grow up far away from Chinese culture. It is our nature to notice contrasting elements, to analyze them and search for meaning. Finding and understanding these opposites helps us accept and make sense of the world. Perhaps this is why contrasting elements are so visually stimulating, engaging and memorable. This was my inspiration for this image.
